Recently I was invited to LeRoy’s 1st Birthday Party. LeRoy is a Black Lab who suffers from having-too-much-syndrome. He is very spoiled and just what on earth do you buy a dog who has it all? I had to come up with a gift–and fast. Luckily I am from a posh town that has thinks about things like dog gifts, and I spent more on organic dog biscuits than I did on my cousin’s baby shower gift.
I couldn’t very well walk into LeRoy’s party empty handed though. He’d be crushed. Here are some other item’s LeRoy received:
Dog Jewelry! LeRoy got some dog charms for his sterling silver chain necklace. One of the charms was the letter “L” for LeRoy. The other charm was a dog tag with a paw engraved along with LeRoy’s cell phone number. LeRoy doesnt actually have a cell phone…at this point anyway. Also, LeRoy and his daddy got matching crowns!
Dog clothes! LeRoy got a very trendy, personalized dog sweater, and a t-shirt with his mamma’s picture on it.
Dog Treats! He got some organic doggie biscuits from me and although the cake was for everyone all the dogs attending this party got some cake. (Don’t worry-it wasn’t chocolate, much to my disappointment.)
Dog Toys! LeRoy got so many toys I didn’t even know what they all did. Kongs. dog chew toys, tug-o-war ropes that looked pretty tough enough to live through his sharp puppy teeth.

So you are thinking about getting your lil Fido some jewelry. Maybe a sparkly necklace to lavish her with or something macho and studded to muscle him up with.
The thing is, is this safe and should I do it?
Well, you have to keep in mind that even though your dog may portray some very human-like qualities like wanting the remote and wanting to eat at the dinner table, they are still animals. Jewelry for pets depends on your pet. You know your pet best and some of those furry diva’s really need to sport their bling. If you have a dog that is begging to be adorned, then by all means, shower them in jewels.
Here are some things to keep in mind:
- If you have a teacup size dog it probably is not a good idea to put a heavy metal chain around their neck. Your little one will probably tip right over and not budge. This would not be good. Same is true for the opposite. Putting a delicate chain around a big and rough-around-the-edges dog may result in them unknowingly scratching the jewelry right off their neck.
- Necklaces on dogs should not be confused for collars or restraints. The jewelry is for adornment only–don’t go stringing the pearls from tree to pet. It doesn’t work that way.
- Measure your dog perfectly to make sure the jewelry is comfortable and not a choking hazard. You want your dog to love how he feels not to start resenting you for what you are making him do. Some pets see wearing their jewelry as an award because they receive so much positive attention while it is on. If he is being choked that really takes the fun out of it.
- Pick out necklaces that suit your dog. Would you buy your petite grandma a skull & bones silver chain? Well, I don’t know your grandma–personally mine would LOVE it but you have to keep your pet in mind. A rhinestone necklace for your Doberman could sound ridiculous; but maybe your Doberman is all about the rhinestone’s. Picking out a necklace that matches your dog’s personality is the key to finding the perfect gift.
- For first time dogs, introduce them to their new necklace by letting them to sniff it and see it. Brush the necklace over their skin so they can feel it and not be afraid. You should make loving, cooing noises while you put the necklace on your dog so they know that it is OK. If you just clamp the necklace on your dogs neck they may feel confused and scared; not knowing what it is or why you’re doing it. So be gentle. The more you like it the more they will like it.
- Tell them how pretty they look!

If you don’t have a necklace for your dog—The Time Has Come!
Dogs are wearing jewelry now. Yes, thats right. Hair ribbons, earrings, bow-ties, tiara’s and pearls are no longer just for you…and Miss America. Maybe it was the unbridled popularity of purse dogs that took off with Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde that makes it now socially acceptable for pet owners to pamper their pets to a heightened level.
Whatever it was, color us all Happy.
If you ever wanted your pet to wear that long strand of pearls without being afraid that he would just be showing off shamelessly, worry no further. Not that you were honestly that worried in the first place! Never be afraid to shimmer what you’ve got. Pets everywhere are being rounded up and bedazzled into stars. Lavish your beloved friend with elegance and glamor. Necklaces are for everyone. Spread the unconditional love and show your pooch how fabulous they can look. Maybe you can even buy a matching set and dress to impress for a walk around the dog park.
Take care with your doggie’s accessories and make sure to never leave your dog completely unattended while glamified. Luxury is a beautiful thing and we need to be careful to not leave our four-legged fashionista in a place where their jewelry can get them into trouble!
